10 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tracking, Chimps and Wildlife Safari Overview

Itinerary for the 10 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tracking, Chimpanzees and Wildlife

Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda, Kigali City Tour

On arrival at the airport, your guide will welcome you warmly and brief you about the itinerary highlights of your 10 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari and primates tour. You will then proceed for Kigali city tour, where you will visit the Genocide Memorial Museum, craft markets and the Kimironko fruits markets where you have a chance to meet the local people and choose your fruit basket. The city tour will also include the old town of Nyamirambo, the new handicraft village and other shops, the Batwa pottery and dance center and the Gisozi Genocide Memorial.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast in the morning, set off for a 4-5 hours journey to Nyungwe forest national park located south of Rwanda. On your picturesque journey, you will have a stop-over in Butare town to visit the National Museum and explore the insightful cultural heritage of the Rwanda people. Lunch will be served at the Ibis restaurant. After lunch, you will optionally visit Murambi Genocide site en route to Nyungwe Forest then dinner and overnight at Gisakura Guest house or Nyungwe forest lodge

Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking and Primates Walk in Nyungwe

Enjoy your early morning breakfast and go for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest. The primates walk in Nyungwe will reward you with a wonderful forest life experience where you will meet other primates other than the chimpanzees such as the black and while colobus monkeys, bluehoest monkeys, and other primates. Nyungwe is known to have over 13 primates living in the park which you can explore on this day. After the trekking experience in the forest, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight as you prepare to go for a canopy walk experience the next day.

Day 4: Nyungwe Canopy Walk – Later Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

After an early breakfast, you will join a group of other visitors waiting at the park headquarters to go for a tree canopy walk in Nyungwe forest. Nyungwe is the only place to enjoy a canopy walk in East and Central africa. With breathtaking scenic views of the rolling hills of Rwanda, the canopy walk takes a maximum of 1-2 hours and later you will retire for lunch at the lodge. After lunch, set off to Ruhengeri (former Musanze) which eventually introduces us to Volcanoes national park; the base of mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

4 Days Mgahinga GorillaHave an early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi to attend to a gorilla trekking briefings from the park ranger guides. Immediately after the briefing, you will be driven off to the starting point of the trek where you will follow trails through the misty forest and the jungles of the Virunga conservation area. You can only spend one hour with them after locating them after which you will start the trek back to the lodge. depending on the time spend searching for gorillas, you may go for evening community walks and interactions with the locals to get the most of your 10 days Rwanda gorilla tracking tour in the Volcanoes National park.

Day 6: Dian Fossey Trail/ Mt. Bisoke Hike

After enjoying breakfast early in the morning, begin the hike for Mount Bisoke which leads you to the top of this volcano and an amazing spectacular crater lake. You can also choose to go for a Dian Fossey graveyard hike instead. This is where Dian spent about 20 years studying the Mountain Gorillas. The trek to the site is quite spectacular, passes through thick bamboo forest and afro-montane habitats, with criss-crossed trails with tracks of forest buffalo and elephant! Expect to see all sorts of wildlife on our way up and down to the graves, nestled between the beautiful volcanic peaks of Karismbi and Visoke. Return to the lodge for lunch and relax in the evening while discussing the day’s sightings! Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Day 7: Transfer to Akagera National Park, Boat Ride on Lake Ihema

Today you will take a long hour driving to the Akagera National park with enroute lunch in Kigali, dinner and overnight at Akagera safari Lodge. Enjoy the breathtaking savannah plains breeze in the evening as you wait for the next day game viewing adventure in the park. Be very anxious to see the black Rhinos and recently intorduced lions on your game safari.

Day 8: Akagera Game Drive

Game drives in Akagera always require you to wake up early in the morning. Therefore at about 6:00hrs, you will have breakfast and then join your guided ranger your safari game drive in the Akagera National Park. A half day game drive here will allow you the opportunity to spot a variety of wild animals such as elephants, buffalos, lions, Maasai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Buchtel’s zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard, and bushbucks. Have lunch and relax while having a discussion about the safari experience, and prepare for a flight back home.

 

Day 9: Lake Ihema Boat Trip, Optional Game Viewing

After breakfast enjoy a boat ride on the the Crater lake. This exposes you to Rwanda’s morning breeze. After lunch, go for an evening game drive and see animals while returning to their habitats.

Day 10: Return to Kigali, Departure

This day you can choose to wake up any time of the mid-morning, have breakfast and start your journey transfer to Kigali, have a city tour, visit local markets, and genocide memorial sites, then transfer to the airport and catch your flight back home to mark the end of your 10 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tracking Safari.
