Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and check in
Upon your arrival at the Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide who will then transfer you to your booked hotel in the city. Dinner at Hotel Le Chandelier.
Day 2: Bujumbura – Rumonge
You will have a half day cultural tour of the capital of Bujumbura. You will visit the independence hero monument and Rusizi National Park where there is an optional boat ride to explore the habitat of hippos and many birds. The Belvedere climb offers an interesting view of Bujumbura city.
Later, you will visit the explorer’s Memorial, a huge rock on the out skirts of Bujumbura that honors the famous meeting between European explorers Stanley and Livingstone. In the afternoon, you will drive to Kigwena National Park for a forest walk. Kigwena is also home to chimpanzees, owl faced monkeys and baboons. Overnight at Resha Saga Resort.
Day 3: Source of the Nile – Kirera waterfalls
Have breakfast and then drive in the direction of the source of the Nile, passing the beautiful scenery and large tea plantations. Have your camera ready for the great Karera waterfalls. After drive to Gitega, the former colonial capital of Burundi. Overnight at Tropitel Hotel Gitega.
Day 4: Gitega- Gishora drum Sanctuary
On this day, you will see the ethnographic and archaeological collections at National Museum in Gitega and the colonial architecture of this former capital. After you will proceed to the fanmous drum sanctuary of Gishore where you can watch the performance of the drummers. The drum sanctuary brings to life the cultural traditions of Burundi. The Gishora site is located on the top of a hill 7km outside the center of Gitega which is the home to two ritual drum namely Rucitema and Murimirwa. These are two ceremonial drums that are never beaten. Overnight at Tropitel Hotel Gitega.
Day 5: Explore Kirundo
After breakfast, you will drive towards the scenic Kirundo region, an area full of birds. Kirundo is filled with numerous lakes like the Kacamirinda and Kinzigiri. You may take a canoe to explore Cohoha the bird lake so named for its ornithological reserve. Overnight at Top Hill Residence.
Day 6: Explore Kibira National Park
Start with a guided nature walk in Kibira Forest National Park, Kibira Forest is known to be home to animals like the black and white colobus monkeys, baboons and chimpanzees. Enjoy the picturesque scenery of the green hills of Burundi and enjoy the views of the Congo – Nile Ridge. If time allows, your night have a chance to visit the pygmy people of Busekera or you might have a tour of the Teza tea factory. Overnight at Hotel Le Chandelier.
Day 7: Airport Transfer
Early in the morning after breakfast, the driver will drop you off at the airport to catch your departure flight.
